Dear 5th Grade Parents, This short week was full of great experiences for your child and myself! We went into church and located our seats for Mass. The students also woke up their minds with math review work including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Your children wrote about their summer vacation, read some stories, and participated in other activities that helped get their minds back in gear. I feel very privileged to have each and every one of your children in my homeroom. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this letter or other issues, feel free to contact me through the school office, my voicemail, or via e-mail at [email protected]. I am looking forward to a fantastic year! Sincerely, Mr. Murphy (5M)
The Past Week: This week’s focus was to help the students become acclimated with 5th grade. We reviewed subject content from fourth grade, as well as shifting our minds from summer vacation to school mode. As a class, we completed several team activities, helping to lay a solid foundation towards building a strong classroom community. School to Home Notes: Every Friday the 5M newsletter will be updated. It can be located at: http://jmurphy3m.weebly.com This will inform you of what your child has worked on during the week, items needed for the classroom, approaching tests, and the upcoming week’s homework assignments. My first newsletter this year will be posted on Friday, September 7th. I will also occasionally send out group e-mailings through constant contact. Snack/Bathroom Breaks: Every day we will have short snack period at approximately 10:00am. Each student is responsible for bringing a healthy, nutritious snack. As a class, we will take a group bathroom break before they eat their snack. Students are also allowed to use the restroom on the way back from lunch and several different specials classes. Homework: For most assignments given, your child will have ample time to complete them in class. Assignments not completed in class will be placed in the students unfinished work bin/folder. If not completed by the end of the day, students will bring the unfinished work home and complete it, returning it the next day. There may be days or weeks where your student completes all of their work at school, thus no homework folder will come home. All scheduled homework assignments and upcoming tests will be listed on the weekly newsletter’s 5M Homework page. Assignment Notebooks: Assignment notebooks will come home every day beginning 8/27/2018. The notebook will list homework for all classes and other miscellaneous items. I will initial students’ notebooks daily. Absences, Medical Appointments (leaving early), Making Up Missed Work: Please report any student absences to the main office. This allows me the peace of mind knowing that your child is safe and accounted for. If your child is absent, I will send all missed work home the next day she/he returns to school. If your child misses three days of school, they will be allowed three days to make up the work. Missed work, due to planned long term vacations, will be sent home either before or after the scheduled dates, depending upon time allotment and what specific units we are currently working with. If your son or daughter has any type of appointment that will take them away from school during the day, please let me know through a home to school note the morning of the appointment. Remember, you must sign your child out and back in upon their return (if applicable) to school. Classroom Rules: 1. Listen when others are talking. 2. Follow directions. 3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 4. Work quietly and do not disturb others. 5. Show respect for school and personal property. Consequences: 1. Student and I will discuss the rule in question and why it happened. 2. Lunch (recess) time may be shorted. 3. A call home may occur to inform you of what has happened. 4. Write - Ups are possible and could occur at any time. 5. A parent/teacher meeting may be required if the issue can’t be resolved. NOTE: Consequences for more severe violations can be located and read in the school handbook. Birthdays: On your child’s birthday we will celebrate by singing “Happy Birthday” during snack time. You may send a small, simple treat if you wish. If the actual day falls on a weekend, a treat may be brought in on Friday or Monday. Half birthdays will be observed for students whose birthdays occur during summer vacation. NOTE: Due to allergies, it would be very helpful if you could include a list of ingredients for any “homemade” birthday treats. Curriculum: This year I will be teaching Science and Social Studies to 4th and 5th grade. 5M homeroom subjects will consist of: Grammar, Math, Science/Social Studies, and Writing. Mrs. McCartney will be teaching 4th and 5th grade Reading, while Ms. Downer will be teaching 4th and 5th grade Religion.
